Recruiting with Purpose: Transitioning from Lawyers to First Responders

She used to recruit lawyers. Now she supports first responders—and found clarity, confidence, and a deeper sense of purpose along the way.
From Career Confusion to Clarity and Confidence
When Brittany first reached out to the Purpose-Driven Career Accelerator, she was in the midst of major life changes. A recent move from Brooklyn to Westchester and a new marriage had left her feeling untethered—and professionally, she felt stuck.
“I was floating. I didn’t know if I should leave my job, change careers, or what. I just knew I wasn’t happy.”
With five years of experience in HR—specializing in recruitment and retention—Brittany had built a successful career. But it no longer felt meaningful. She felt overlooked, micromanaged, and disconnected from the type of work she loved most.
Getting Clear on What Really Matters
Through coaching, Brittany began a journey of self-discovery. Together, we explored her core values, ideal work environment, strengths, and motivators.
“I’d never considered my values before. That exercise laid the foundation. Now, I use them to guide every decision I make.”
She realized she was deeply motivated by connection, trust, and purpose—and that none of those things were present in her current role. She wasn’t interviewing candidates (her favorite part), she didn’t feel empowered by her manager, and the company culture left her feeling small.
“I thrive on relationships. I love to chitchat and connect—but I was only interviewing once in a blue moon. I didn’t feel like myself.”
Learning to Advocate for Herself
One of Brittany’s biggest challenges was navigating a difficult manager. Through coaching, she built the confidence and communication skills to advocate for herself—and tried several approaches.
“I had those conversations, but they didn’t go in my favor. That’s when I realized: this isn’t the right place for me.”
Rather than spiral, she took what she learned and used it to refine her job search—getting laser-focused on roles, environments, and missions that matched her values.
A Mission-Driven Job That Finally Felt Right
That clarity paid off. While exploring opportunities, one job stood out: recruiting for first responders.
“I knew immediately—it aligned with my values, my skills, and it felt meaningful.”
She got the offer—and negotiated a 10% salary increase.
“In my first week, my boss told me she hired me because she believed in me. That trust fueled my confidence right away.”
Today, Brittany works full-time in an in-person role where she helps place first responders in vital positions. Her new company is diverse, creative, and filled with people from all backgrounds—including veterans.
“I’m surrounded by people who inspire me. The creative atmosphere, the trust, the mission—it brings out the best in me.”
Rediscovering Faith and Community at Work
One unexpected theme that emerged during coaching? Faith. Brittany hadn’t realized how important it was—until she made space for it.
“I thought I needed a faith-based job to live that value. But my coworkers talk about church, recommend books… I’ve never felt so accepted.”
This alignment extended beyond work. She began volunteering, spending more time with her husband, and getting involved in local groups.
“Before, my life was just work. Now, it’s full. I joined a meetup group, I explore Westchester, and I’ve started volunteering. I’m meeting amazing people—and it all started with getting clear on who I really am.”
What’s Next: Stability, Space, and Side Projects
Now that she’s in a role that’s stable and fulfilling, Brittany’s giving herself permission to rest—and dream bigger.
“I’ve had a lot of instability in my career. This job feels like a gift. I’m enjoying it, and now I finally have space to think about passion projects.”
One idea she’s exploring? A social media project that blends faith, fashion, and HR, designed to uplift others going through their own career crossroads.
Brittany’s Advice for Anyone Feeling Stuck
“Just do it. You might not get exactly what you think you want—but you’ll get what you need. And that will lead you somewhere better.”
Even her ideal work setup surprised her. She used to resist going back to the office—now she commutes five days a week and loves it.
“It gives me structure, separation from home, and connection. I’ve met people who’ve changed my life—just by showing up.”
